Celebrating a quarter-century of winemaking excellence at Kahurangi Estate

In 2023, Kahurangi Estate marked its 25th year. This milestone is more than a number – it's a testament to the enduring legacy and craftsmanship that has cemented Kahurangi as a quintessential part of the Nelson Tasman region's rich history.

Over the past 25 years, the estate has evolved, reflecting both the changing palates of wine enthusiasts and the steady hands of time that shape each vintage. This evolution is celebrated in the Kahurangi Estate Wine Library, launched last year as a chronicle of the winery’s journey. Each bottle in this library – stored until they age to perfection – preserves a unique chapter of Kahurangi's story.

Nestled amidst the unique terroir of the Waimea Plains, Moutere Hills and the Kina Peninsula, Kahurangi's journey is intertwined with the very essence of the land and sea that nurture its vineyards. The maritime climate of Nelson, particularly around the Kina Peninsula, has certainly influenced the development of some of Kahurangi's signature wines.

The nuanced character of the sea gently infuses the wines produced from grapes harvested on the Kina Peninsula, lending them a distinctive complexity. Whether it's the briny depth of oysters or the rich, buttery essence of lobster, Kahurangi’s wines elevate marine flavours. The Nelson Sauvignon Blanc, with its vibrant tropical and citrus notes pairs with creamy dishes like seafood chowder, Thai-inspired seafood dishes or whitebait patties. And for those who relish grilled seafood, the lighter Nelson Pinot Noir is the perfect complement.

Behind every bottle of Kahurangi Estate wine is a story of passion and family. Managing Director David Barrett, who grew up cherishing family dinners, sees wine as a medium that brings people together. Barrett's personal favourite, the Four Barrels Premium Reserve Chardonnay, epitomises the excellence Kahurangi strives for. Yet he believes the true spirit of wine lies in its ability to suit every occasion, from grand celebrations to intimate family gatherings.

As Kahurangi Estate steps into its next quarter-century, it remains steadfast in its commitment to capturing the essence of Nelson's unique terroir. The Wine Library, an evolving testament to the Estate's journey, invites wine lovers to explore the depth and diversity of Kahurangi's offerings. From sun-kissed vineyards to the caress of the sea, every bottle from Kahurangi is a piece of Nelson's history – a story waiting to be savoured.
